5* Analysis of Rock Video 1

This is showing a good use of post production, by over lapping the images making her seem the most important within the video in general.

This shot mainly conveys the mise-en-scene within the video, and the theme for the video, conveying an interesting shot for the viewer.
This video has a good use of mise-en-scene;
Costume - through the different in costume as it is very victorian era, with long dresses and big hair but with more staged make up. And with the guys wearing suits with either a bow tie or an normal tie.
Location - it is mainly set in one location where the band are playing, this makes the video seem more interesting to watch.

This Shows the band performing, it is an establishing shot, showing all the instruments within the band and shows the music genre due to costume and background.

Performance

Sound

o Master shot is used in the first frame to show the whole band

o Zooms in towards the main singer – emphasising his importance

o Close up’s of band members Mainly lead singer

o Long shots of band playing, then zooming in focusing on main singer

o Close up’s and mid shots of characters, other than the band, especially a women with a really white face; this shows that he seems to be talking about her. Also close ups of the man who seems to be in control, who is competing with the lead singer

o Long shots of the location, seems like a play different from normal rock genre where the band is playing in front of an audience that is jumping up and down, they are sitting and watching the band play.

o More shots of the drummer, than of the guitarists. And usually quick cuts of them if on screen

o Long shot of the ‘dance’ of the women while the men watch. Very old fashioned, however they pull up their dresses which seem to continue the theme of being in a music video.

o Close ups of lead singer with the girl, making him seem more important than the other band members. This shot is while they are looking over the balcony watching fireworks seems like ‘Romeo and Juliet’ almost.

o The camera seems steady throughout.

o The camera also seems to be in one angle not using low or high angle just straight on.

o The camera also seems to zoom out, and then zoom in an instance, making the video very fast paced.

o Seems like a play within Victorian times. So costume is very old fashioned, women in big dresses and big hair, using also really pale makeup – compared to Rnb videos were all the girls are half naked and really tanned. Also with the pink cheeks emphasise her innocence within the video’s storyline. Men are mainly in suits with waistcoats – the band. One man is more important than the others by sitting in a big chair like Henry VIII and wearing a dressing gown that looks expensive for the era.

o Location is very old fashioned. Different from other rock video’s as the audience isn’t jumping up and down, but sitting watching

o Lighting is very staged

o Uses props like apples a lot

o Uses smoke

o Uses tracking, to move on from one shot to the next making it more fast paced for the audience

o Quick cuts, creates a fast pace which goes well with the music genre

o Slow cuts near the beginning before the music starts properly, then makes the quicker cuts seem more upbeat

o Quick cuts also emphasise the fast pace of the dance between the women and the lead singer and the other guy

o Uses an overlap of the women dancing while the two men play drafts. It looks like a fade in but just sits on top of the streaming of the video; emphasises her influence over the men

o Uses an faded out shot twice not showing the faces of the people but just there outline, makes the video seem more interesting

o Uses Sepia tone, to emphasise the difference of the band singer to this particular time

o 4 band members overall – one drummer, one vocalist, 2 guitarists

o Costumes props and location fits in well with the concept of the video

o Video does have a storyline but isn’t followed all the time, making it somewhat abstract

o Band isn’t really full of energy, but as the audience we can tell that they are really in to the song, and feel the music

o Lip Syncing to the song, however could be playing the song as singing while doing so.
